Our New Name--Giving Back, Linda's Legacy

We have had a year of transition. For the past 7 years, we have been a part of the National Heritage Foundation, a collection of small foundations that can operate as true non-profits and pool resources. This year, we have incorporated ourselves and have become a free standing LLC. We have established an active Board of Directors, and have begun the task of formalizing many of the processes that have been established over the past few years. This change has necessitated a name change, and we wanted to honor our Founder, Linda Greenberg, in the new name. We are now officially Giving Back, Linda’s Legacy. On November 12, we held a dinner in Linda’s honor and announced this new name. I believe this is an important tribute to an amazing person.

Homeless Drive Seeks Volunteers and Donations

Each Christmas Eve for the nearly 25 years, Giving Back, Inc.s volunteers have delivered life-saving essentials and food to homeless men, women, and children in Baltimore and Anne Arundel County. What started as a trunk-load and a prayer has grown into a massive relief effort that dozens of shelters and hundreds of "street-homeless" benefit from.

While much of our goods are delivered to support over 20 homeless shelters in Baltimore City, Washington DC, and Anne Arundel County, there is a separate component of the drive that focuses directly on the streets of Baltimore and Washington.<

Over the past few years, Giving Back has developed a program to provide backpacks, coats and boots to the people directly on the streets. Each backpack will include a heavy duty hooded sweatshirt, thermal underwear (top and bottom), a hat, warm gloves, and a warm pair of socks. Last year we distributed over 1000 of these backpacks, and sadly, there was not enough. We are looking for organizations/neighborhoods/individuals to help us fill these backpacks for the 2007 drive. Giving Back will purchase the backpack, and provide them to groups willing to collect the materials to fill and return them. We have over 20 schools and churches/synagogues doing drives in this manner. We could easily double that number! We have volunteers that will speak to your group, and help you organize and manage your drive.

Volunteers (no experience necessary) are also needed to distribute fliers, make calls, and sort goods at the Farmers Market on Riva Road in Annapolis Thursday., Dec. 20th through Sunday., Dec. 23rd from 11am 5pm. Those volunteering during this time will have the opportunity to help with the delivery run, personally distributing goods and food to the homeless on December 24th, either during the day or evening shift. Students can earn community service hours.

On December 24th, nurses, doctors, hairdressers, singers, Santa Clauses, or any other creative soul who can help or lift spirits are needed!

If your time is in short supply, tax-deductible monetary donations can be used to fill backpacks with essentials to be distributed to the homeless. Each Backpack costs about $25 filled. Make checks payable to Giving Back, Inc., with "Holiday Homeless Drive" in the memo.  Mail donations to 626C Admiral Drive, Annapolis, MD 21401.
